GGZ care in the Netherlands
To be eligible for mental health care (GGZ) treatment, you must meet a number of conditions. Here are the main conditions:
Referral from a general practitioner
You need a referral from your GP to be eligible for mental health care treatment. The general practitioner assesses whether you have a psychological disorder that requires treatment and refers you to the correct specialist mental health institution.
Insurance coverage
In order to be eligible for mental healthcare treatment, you must be insured for mental health care. In the Netherlands, mental health care is covered by basic insurance and the treatment is reimbursed by the health insurer. The exact conditions depend on your insurer and the policy you have, so you should check your policy or contact your insurer for more information.
Need for care
The mental health institution assesses whether on online treatment is possible. This means that an assessment is made of whether the treatment is necessary for the recovery of the psychological problems.
Good to know
By ordering an online therapy, you are not yet committed to anything. Only after an intake with the healthcare provider of your choice do you decide whether you actually want to start the therapy.
How to sign up for a therapy
At Welshop you will find online therapies from various healthcare providers. Usually there is no waiting list for most therapies: you can get started right away. Just make sure you have a referral for Mental Health Care. Some providers have additional requirements for the referral. This is further explained on the page about the treatment you have chosen. It goes like this.
- Choose from the offer as available on this webpage: aanbod.
- Click on “aanmelden” (submit).
- After you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email at the email address you entered.
- In most cases, the provider of your choice will contact you within a few days to schedule an intake interview. This conversation is also online, with video calling.
Only after the intake interview does your therapy start “officially”. Before or immediately after the intake interview, you can always decide not to seek treatment or elsewhere. You decide that yourself.
What is online therapy?
Online therapy offers the same quality as ‘traditional therapy’, provided by experienced psychologists. You practice and contact your psychologist from your own home or from another location in which you feel comfortable. Through a secure online environment, you can immediately start working on assignments and determine the pace of your therapy together with your practitioner. In the next video, psychologist Tex explains what such a therapy session looks like. English subtitles are available for this video.
Intake interview
Before the therapy starts, you will make a therapy plan during a personal intake interview with the healthcare provider of your choice. Together you will discuss the approach, working method and contact and evaluation moments. Based on this conversation, you can decide whether you want to start the therapy with the provider of your choice.
